The announcement says that from August 1st, only platinum and gold members can enjoy a fee waiver for credit card payment. People who use WeChat Pay’s investment plan for an amount of over 500CNY every month can also avoid the additional 0.1% fee. Other than these users, everyone else using WeChat Pay to repay their credit card debts will be charged for 0.1% fee (1 cent minimum).
From December 1st, 2017, WeChat Pay was already charging users whose credit card repayment exceeded 5000 CNY. The fee was only charged for the amount over 5000 CNY, and was still free for any repayments less than 5000 CNY. This new rule means that all users (excluding the above exceptions) repaying credit card bills will be charged.
In the announcement, WeChat claims that every repayment actually incurs fees for the platform, meaning that WeChat had been using its own money to pay for users’ transactions. Recently, as credit card repayment develops, these fees have grown tremendously. To even the cost and sustain further development, they have made this adjustment to the service they offer.
