In another addition to the list ofthings that you obviously shouldn’t do on WeChat, a Yunnan man has been sentenced to six months in prison after allowing hundreds of pornographic videos to be shared on a group that he managed.
The 31-year-old man surnamed Luo from Yunnan’s Dehong Dai and Jingpo prefecture created a WeChat group last year called 「Border Antique Auction.」 However, this year, the group began showcasing more than just antiques, according to a report fromThe Paper.
From March 31st to April 10th, authorities found that 515 「obscene」 videos had been shared on the WeChat group for an average of about 46 vids a day. In order to try to avoid detection, Luo changed the name of the group several times. By the time that it was shut down, it had 150 members.
Luo was arrested in May and pleaded guilty to spreading obscene content at his trial in August. This week, a local court sentenced him to six months in prison with Luo actually getting off easy since he was afirst-time offender and had shown remorse.
His imprisonment comes after China institutednew rulesgoverning WeChat and other social media apps last October. One part of these regulations made WeChat group administrators legallyresponsiblefor the content shared in their groups.
In recent years, a number of people have been arrested for what they have posted on WeChat. Last year, a 31-year-old migrant worker was sentenced to nine months in prison for joking 「come join ISIS with me」 in one WeChat group. This month, a pair of foreigners found themselves in trouble with police in Shenzhen afterposting racist insults in a local group, including one remark referencing the Nanjing Massacre.
